Cold fusion is one of the borderline phenomena of science, much disputed and discussed by scientists. Some claim it to be impossible while others believe cold fusion has the potential of revolutionising the world's energy supplies.

Cold fusion however, is only one of the unsolved riddles of science that complicates Paul's career. The unexpected occurs as he encounters the young journalist, Sanna, and embarks on a turbulent love affair. Sanna is herself in search of the scientist, Andreij, who has allegedly succeeded in producing cold fusion. Although Paul is sceptical about all things associated with cold fusion, he joins Sanna in her search for Andreij, who after fleeing Belarus has gone underground somewhere in the West.
